TMNT - Splinted fate

THE BRIEF

This project involved a two-phase approach to create visually compelling motion graphics (mograph) for a game promotion. The client sought a style that deconstructed elements from the game, combining 2.5D character art with comic book-inspired transitions. The final deliverables included seamless transitions in and out of game footage and a series of high-impact scenes aligned with the game’s branding.

Challenges & Notes

  • Balancing Creativity and Brand Identity: While pushing for a bold, comic-inspired aesthetic, maintaining consistency with the game’s style was paramount.

  • Technical Adjustments: The need to deconstruct and potentially repaint assets required ongoing collaboration with the client.

IDEAS & STYLE
FRAMES

As part of the initial phase of this project, I developed style frames to establish the visual language for the motion graphics. These frames served as a foundation for crafting the comic book-inspired aesthetic while aligning with the game’s brand identity.

Comic Book Influence:

  • I incorporated dynamic halftone textures, bold outlines, and vibrant color palettes inspired by classic comic book art.

  • The frames emphasized action-driven transitions, designed to create energy and movement, essential for drawing viewers into the game footage.

FEEDBACK & REDESIGN

Following client feedback, I developed a new set of style frames that shifted the focus to integrating more elements from the game’s existing UI and graphic design, while still incorporating the prebuilt 2D character assets. This approach ensured the motion graphics felt deeply connected to the game’s visual identity.

  • Referencing in-game textures, color palettes, and background designs, I updated the style frames to better align with the visual language of the game itself.

  • Integrated backgrounds and portal designs from the client’s preferred assets to create layered compositions that felt authentic to the game.

Watch Now

Based on the approved style frames and client feedback, we created dynamic motion graphics that brought each design to life. These animations were carefully tailored to reflect the unique personality traits of the TMNT characters, ensuring that transitions and movements felt character-specific. For example, transitions for Michelangelo incorporated playful, high-energy spins and bursts of color, while Raphael’s featured bold, aggressive slashes and intense visual effects. This approach allowed the motion graphics to resonate with each character's distinct persona while staying true to the overall visual language.

By combining these character-driven transitions with the approved UI and game-inspired elements, the animations achieved a seamless blend of storytelling and branding. The motion graphics leveraged subtle 2.5D effects, enhanced comic book aesthetics, and integrated game assets to create a cohesive, high-impact visual experience that aligned perfectly with the game’s tone and style.

2.5D PARALLAX

Building on the client’s provided assets, I created 2.5D animations that brought still photos and artwork to life. This involved deconstructing static character art and background visuals into layered compositions, allowing for the addition of depth, parallax effects, and dynamic camera movements. By animating elements such as subtle character gestures, environmental effects, and layered transitions, I transformed flat imagery into engaging, lifelike scenes that enhanced the overall narrative.

These animations seamlessly integrated with the motion graphics and transitions, emphasizing the personalities of the TMNT characters while maintaining the game’s aesthetic. For example, characters were animated to appear as if they were stepping into action, with flowing motion and layered backgrounds adding richness to their environments. This approach not only breathed life into static visuals but also created a cinematic quality that elevated the storytelling, making the artwork feel immersive and dynamic.

ADDITIONAL GRAPHICS

Additional graphics

To further enhance the gameplay footage, I created a range of additional graphics designed to support the editor in crafting a dynamic and visually engaging edit. These included split-screen layouts, tailored transitions, and brushstroke effects that complemented the motion graphics style. The split screens were designed to highlight multiple gameplay perspectives simultaneously, using bold comic-inspired borders and dynamic framing to maintain the aesthetic coherence.

I also developed animated elements like brushstroke overlays, energy bursts, and accent animations to emphasize key moments in the gameplay. These graphics added a layer of excitement and cohesion, tying the gameplay sequences to the broader motion graphics while amplifying the energy of the edit. This collaborative effort ensured the final footage was visually cohesive, polished, and engaging for the audience.
